What is tool calling?
Tool calling is a model producing a structured request to invoke an external function rather than answering in prose. It is how a language model reaches beyond its own weights, and its reliability is a strong candidate for fine-tuning.
The reliability problem compounds across steps. A model correct on ninety-five per cent of individual calls completes a five-step task about three-quarters of the time, and that end-to-end figure is the one users experience.
Fine-tuning on real successful traces improves argument formatting and call ordering substantially, and it shortens prompts by letting you send abbreviated tool definitions rather than full schemas.
