Model licence
What is model licence?
A model licence governs what may be done with the weights and with anything derived from them. Terms vary widely between families, and the obligations survive fine-tuning — a derivative inherits the constraints of the base.
Three patterns dominate. Standard permissive licences impose almost nothing. Community licences add acceptable-use policies, naming requirements and sometimes revenue thresholds. Bespoke licences have to be read individually.
The clauses that surprise people are naming requirements, restrictions on using outputs to train other models, and revenue thresholds that convert a free licence into a commercial negotiation as a company grows.
